Brand New Ranking for Wikio's UK Top Blogs - Wine and Beer

We're pleased to announce a brand new ranking this month! Launched at the weekend along with the regular monthly update, the new ranking is of the UK and Ireland' finest Wine and Beer blogs. Many of these already appeared in the Gastronomy ranking, but they have now moved over to their own dedicated one.

Top of the pops was Spittoon (whose sister blog Spittoon Extra stays in Gastronomy), followed by Brew Wales, and Peter Brown's Beer Blog completes the Top 3. The Wine Conversation comes in 5th and carried an exclusive on the new ranking, which you can read here.

If you have a blog that you'd like to see in this ranking you can submit it here or let us know via info AT wikio DOT co DOT uk.

We hope to release some more new rankings in the coming months, so do stayed tuned!

Wikio’s Experts

Wikio is launching a new collaboration with webmasters and expert bloggers to show our team’s determination to work with bloggers in order to perfect our rankings. This idea was born in France following the requests for such a system from many bloggers.

We want to create new rankings for bloggers and do so with their help. This involves continuing to index new blogs and categorising them into the right categories, as well as creating new categories so that we can better reflect the discussions going on in UK blogging.

We would like to collaborate with a blogger for each category who will act as a moderator. We also wish to benefit from this blogger's expertise in the form of advice and suggestions on Wikio’s selection of websites in the given category. We want to improve our sourcing and elevate the number of blogs present in each category, thus improving quality and coherence on a continual basis. We would also wish to benefit from the blogger's network in order to offer other new categories. In exchange, the ranking concerned will highlight this expert blogger, using a screenshot of his/her blog and a description of its author.

We ask all interested bloggers to contact us via (info @ wikio.co.uk), and to spread the information to their networks. And don't forget you will be able to check out our blog to get the latest new on the new rankings created by our Experts.

Wikio.co.uk has passed the 100 000 blogs mark!

Wikio.co.uk

We are pleased to announce that Wikio.co.uk has exceeded 100 000 blogs this week! And this figure will increase in the coming days.

Wikio.co.uk 100 000 blogs

On the site, you can see below the search bar "Live information from 167417 media sites and blogs" (see above) but this figure represents the number of English-language blogs and not the number of UK blogs.

The rankings will benefit from these new blogs. There will also be new things to come, including the creation of new categories (perhaps Wine & Beer).

The increase in the number of blogs indexed enriches the service in terms of information and of course helps us to improve our themed rankings.

Top European Blogs - June 2009

There are a few changes in the Top 50 this month: a German blog is back on top, though it's not Basic Thinking taking back the title it held for so long as Europe's number 1 blog, but netzpolitik.org. In total Germany has 11 blogs in the ranking with 4 in the Top 10.

Sky TG24 drops a position to go into second place, one of 6 Italian blogs in the Top 50. Spain drops yet another two blogs, but still remains Europe's best represented country with 14 of the Top 50 - 7 of which place 20th or better; top Spanish blog Microservios is 6th.

France boasts 10 blogs in the top 50 with Le point sur le i and Le blog de Virginie B making their debuts at 45th and 49th respectively.

Britian's representation has climbed from 8 to 9 blogs, two of which feature in the Top 5: Ian Dale's Diary is 3rd, whilst Guy Fawkes' blog is 5th. Dizzy Thinks climbs into the Top 50 at 31st.

The New Wikio Wordpress Plugin

Wp plugin

We are happy to announce the beta release of our new Wordpress plugin! It will allow you to install and personalise our new tools in just a few clicks:

- The new Universal Share button that allows your readers to promote your posts on sites such as Twitter and Facebook
- Our new Universal Subscription button, with which readers can subscribe to your site however they like (RSS, e-mail, with a Mac or Vista gadget)
- Our Vote button, which means readers can promote your articles directly on Wikio.
- Our Top Blogs badge, which displays your position in our rankings and updates automatically.
- News Widgets that display the latest articles on the topics that interest you.

There are two ways to download it:
- If you have recently installed (the 2.7 mini version), you can use the automatic installation function: Extensions > new extension > search "Wikio"
- Otherwise just head to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/profile/wikio

With this new tool, and with our continued efforts, we hope to position ourselves as one of the main suppliers of quality web tools for bloggers, site administrators and all Internet users. We aim to contribute to the Internet at large with stable, complete and localised services. This plugin has been translated into all the languages catered for by the various Wikio sites and supplies bloggers and webmasters with the tools they need to make it easy for their readers to access their posts and to promote their content.

Installing the Universal Share Button in Typepad

Many of you have been asking us how to install Universal Share Button underneath each article on typepad.

So here is a quick and easy explanation as to how to do so.

This method should work on all Typepad blogs, but if you encounter any problems then just leave us a comment here with the URL of your site.

So, how to install the button:

1/ First copy the script that you will find in this file.

2/ Go into the administration area of Typepad for the relevant blog and choose "Edit your current design"

3/ Then click "Content"

4/ Choose "Widgets" in the column on the left

5/ Then "Embed your own HTML"

6/ Then "Add this module"

7/ Paste the code (copied in step 1) in the popup that appears

8/ And finally save your changes at the bottom of the page

The buttons will then be visible underneath the articles themselves (and thus not on the home page of your blog).

Here is a quick video illustrating the process above:

Official release of the Wikio Share button

After our Universal Subscription button, Wikio is now ready to offer you our Universal Share button. With it you can easily promote the content of your favourite sites by promoting and sharing their articles on all the major share platforms such as Twitter or Facebook, and all this in just one click! The Universal Share button is available in two versions (just like the Universal Subscription button) - a standard version and a pop-up one.

Our new button is available on this page. Don't hesitate to give us your opinions. ;-)

Top European Blogs - May 2009

There are a number of changes this month, including a boost for UK blogs. The UK now boasts eight blogs in the Top 50 (up from six), including two in the Top 5, as Guido and Iain Dale march up the rankings. Spain is still way out in front with 16 blogs, but that is yet again down two from the month before.

Germany boasts two new entries bringing it's total to 11, including the remarkable StyleSpion, which goes straight in at 9, having not appeared in last month's Top 50 at all. However, Germany's reigning champ was dethroned: after an amazing six months as top dog, Basic Thinking dropped from first to fourth, allowing Italian site Sky TG24 - Reporter Diffuso to take top spot. Overall, Italian blogs still make up only 6 of the Top 50, but again they claim 5 of the Top 20 positions.

French blog Poppyrose et la vie en rose climbs an impressive nine places to 24th, but the overall French total drops to nine.

Top European Blogs - April 2009

March's Top 5 European Blogs remain just that this time around. Germany thus retains the Top 2 spots with the recently sold Basic Thinking first, followed by netzpolitik.org in second; they are amongst 9 German blogs to feature. Spain dominates still, with 18 blogs, though this is down from 20 last month. The only change in the Top 10 invloves a Spanish blog: ALT1040'blog, climbing to 6th, replaces Italy's Sky TG24 - Reporter Diffuso - one of an impressive 5 Italian blogs in this month's Top 20, though Italy boasts only one further blog in the list making for 6 overall.

France's Froufrou et capucine makes an impressive entry at 27th, ahead even of the Techcrunch France - another of the French's 11 sites in the Top 50. Last and... well, in fact joint least... Britian is represented by 6 blogs in the Top 50 - all Political ones: Iain Dale's Diary, is top dog in 4th, followed by Guy Fawkes' blog in 8th; Liberal Conspiracy (22nd) and ConservativeHome's ToryDiary (24th) make the top half of the list, followed by politicalbetting.com in 31st position. Labourlist drops out to make way for Liberal Democrat Voice in 44th.
