The term “sourcing” is used to describe the selection of news sources. Unlike a general search engine, Wikio doesn’t scan all existing web sites, but only a selection of sites which are dedicated to news. These sources are selected by our researchers or suggested by internet users, then incorporated into the search engine. Wikio is able to syndicate just about all news sources, whether they’re RSS feeds, HTML pages or XML databases.
The process for selecting news sources is carried out with no ideological or political bias. The only sources we exclude are those whose content is anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist, sexist or more generally intolerant in nature, those which provide no editorial added value, and of course, those which propagate spam. Wikio has also set up an automatic filtering system which can alert our team of moderators who watch over the site’s editorial quality.
News is categorized in one of two ways, depending on whether the content of a source is dedicated to a specific theme or not. For example, a blog dedicated to the Lakers world will fit perfectly into the “Los Angeles Lakers” category, where you'll find every one of its articles without exception. A more generalist site that combines news on health, new technologies and the economy cannot be filed under a specific category, since that would generate what is referred to as noise (news which has nothing to do with the theme). On the other hand, news relating to a particular subject will always be included in the most suitable category, thanks to the work of our researchers who have built up thesauruses (keywords) for each category.
We’re in the process of gathering articles for the German, English, Spanish and Italian versions of Wikio from 100,000 sources - sources which originate from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Britain, America, Ireland, Australia, Spain, South America, as well as other lands. We continue to add new sources every day, and you can suggest sources to us by using the “Suggest a source” form.
