Wikio uses semantics technology to analyse the
meaning of words and work out their relevance to a page’s theme. Without
unveiling all the secrets of our algorithm, we can tell you that a news item’s
relevance score is determined by several parameters, all of which influence how
high up the page an article appears.
- Date
of the article: Wikio favors the very latest news items.
- Length
of the text: the longer an article, the better its chances of going into detail
and thereby enabling a better understanding of the news.
- Location
of the search term in the article: a term found in a title clearly suggests
that the subject is explored in more depth than if the term was only found in
the tenth line of the article.
- User
votes: an article voted for by Internet users will remain available longer than
other articles.
Through this relevance score and the semantic
search engine, we can also incorporate news items on the same subject into the
same group, and can continually update this group as time passes and further
news items emerge.
By default, news items are always categorised by relevance. However, there are tabs which enable you to display them by date or by popularity – i.e. based on user votes.
