Installing the Universal Share Button in Typepad

Many of you have been asking us how to install Universal Share Button underneath each article on typepad.

So here is a quick and easy explanation as to how to do so.

This method should work on all Typepad blogs, but if you encounter any problems then just leave us a comment here with the URL of your site.

So, how to install the button:

1/ First copy the script that you will find in this file.

2/ Go into the administration area of Typepad for the relevant blog and choose "Edit your current design"

3/ Then click "Content"

4/ Choose "Widgets" in the column on the left

5/ Then "Embed your own HTML"

6/ Then "Add this module"

7/ Paste the code (copied in step 1) in the popup that appears

8/ And finally save your changes at the bottom of the page

The buttons will then be visible underneath the articles themselves (and thus not on the home page of your blog).

Here is a quick video illustrating the process above:

Wikio for iPhone

So here it is... many have been asking for it, a version of Wikio that is specially calibrated for the iPhone is now available in all the Wikio languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian and German.

Wikio_iphone_com_home

To use Wikio from an iPhone, simple open Safari and type iphone.wikio.com or even just m.wikio.com.

If you go to the Wikio home page from an iPhone, you will automatically be redirected to the mobile version. The classic version will still be accessible via the "Web version" link.

You can search or browse the site by clicking on news articles or their associated tags.

This is essentially a version optimized for iPhone, but one that is also compatible with the majority of other mobiles connected to the Internet.

If you often search the same terms on Wikio, don't forget you can bookmark those results.

And do give us your feedback!

Adding Wikio to your iPhone homepage is very simple:

  • Go to iphone.wikio.com
  • Click + at the bottom of the Safari screen
  • Click "Add to Home Screen"
  • Add the Address' title or simply click "Add"
  • Put the icon wherever you like.Wikio_iphone_com_saisie_nom_2 Wikio_iphone_com_ajout_accueil_2 Wikio_iphone_com_accueil

Feedburner now includes Wikio subscribers

Wikio is a news portal, but it is also an RSS reader.

RSS readers allow you to read all the latest articles published on your favourite blogs or web sites without having to go to each of them individually to see if they have been updated: a resume of each new item comes to you, and you can then go to the blog or site in question as and should you want to.

Wikio is one such RSS reader, and is very easy to use. Whilst there are more sophisticated options available like Netvibes or Google reader, for quickly and simply following the articles on your favourite sites and blogs directly from your news portal there is none better ;-)

If you see an interesting article on Wikio that appears on a particular blog, and you want to subscribe to that blog, you need simply click 'Subscribe' under the article headline... and that's it!

You can also type the addresses of sites that you like directly into a personal page (the Wikio tabs) and follow them there - you can of course have several on one page. You may also wish to check out our Top Blogs and choose blogs to which you wish to subscribe from the rankings.

Google's FeedBurner statistics service now (since yesterday, in fact) takes into account the subscribers to RSS Feeds that use Wikio to see the updates on their favourite sites. Feedburner does not yet offer Wikio as a default RSS reader, but if you are a blogger and you wish to add Wikio to the list of RSS readers you offer, you need simply go here to find all the info you need. You can also a add Wikio subscription button directly to your blog.

Happy RSSing!

October's Top Blog Rankings

Unsurprisingly after the recent changes to the calculation of our rankings, this month sees a number of movers and shakers. Obviously the new system and fall clean-up required a lot of work, so once again please do excuse us for the late release - obviously we wanted to get it right.

With the elections coming up, a lot of blogs in the politics category have improved their position in the rankings, such as The Huffington Post,  The Corner, Political Punch and Think Progress. Tech Crunch and Gizmodo manage to defend their top positions in the general ranking as well as the technology category.

Here are the new top blogs per category:

Business ....................... The Conscience of a Liberal
Celebrity ...................................................... Jezebel
Film ................................. Deadline Hollywood Daily
Food and Wine ......................................... Slashfood
Health ...................................................... Pharmalot
Music ................................................. Listening Post
Politics ...................................... The Huffington Post
Sciences ........................................... Wired Science
Sports  ....................................................... Deadspin
Technology  .......................................... TechCrunch

New improved Top Blog rankings on their way

Wikiotravaux  As you will have seen on the Autumn Cleaning blog post, we are currently overhauling our Top Blogs algorithm in order to improve the rankngs. We are taking on board a number of your suggestions and the advice of our resident expert Jean Véronis.

The work being done is more widely explained in that last post, though one of the new features not mentioned is that we will from now on be counting backlinks from the preceding calendar month in its entirety. Before, we had to base our calculations on the backlinks recorded up a given point during the final month (and so not up to the very last day of that month), because we released the rankings on the 1st of each month sharp. Our calculations were thus not aligned with the calendar month, but were aligned instead with a watershed that fell during the month.

We have for various reasons decided to change that, meaning our rankings now neatly encompass the whole calendar months that precede them. The finalised tables will thus be released a few days after the end of each month, as this allows our algorithm to fully analyse the results and also our content managers to do their thing, as they verify all of the rankings by hand once they are in place.

This month's should be available in the coming days, so do watch the space to see the new and improved rankings go live.

Top Blog Rankings: Autumn Cleaning

A big clean is more commonly carried out in Spring... but there's no reason not to do some in Autumn. This indeed is what has happened to our Blog rankings. They have to some degree been completely reworked. A significant amount of dust had accumulated in certain nooks and crannies. This needed to be attended to before we could progress and try to improve the rankings as a whole.

So, the various Wikio teams have spent September with broom in hand and the results are likely to ruffle a few feathers... There will surely be some grinding of teeth (there always is: not everyone can be on top), but the engine is now much cleaner. Several of you had noted that there were inactive blogs that had stuck around in the rankings, even though they had not published for a few weeks. Well no more - they're out. Our developers have created several indicators, one of which flags up publication volume, that allow us to more closely follow the behaviour of the tens of thousands of sources in our database. All such blogs who had not published for four months have thus been jettisoned. Other indicators were a little more difficult to implement, but now in place they allow one to assess the similarity between sources and so address spammers, aggregators and multiple posting (which is sometimes legitimate, but such activity can seriously affect the analysis of backlinks, and thus the rankings as they are based solely on this criterion). So out also with aggregators and other sites doubling up content (a lot of the recent work was precisely this, dealing with the enormous presence of source duplication which is a delicate and extensive process).

Another small change was implemented by our resident expert Jean Véronis and our development team, something which has no bearing on the overall principle, but significantly improves the transition from one month to another. Many of you had seen that there was sometimes a yo-yo effect, whereby blogs suddenly lose a large number of positions, or the opposite, they shoot up the rankings like a rocket. This was largely due to the time period used when analysing backlinks. This period as you will know is four months, but say a blog is very heavily buzzed in April, it will then appear high up in the rankings from May to August and then (if it is not further talked about in the mean time), suddenly plummet in September. Not ideal clearly. Jean thus replaced the straight four-month calculation with a progressive attenuation over nine months. So September's links have a value of 1, August's a value of 1 – 1/9, July's 1 – 2/9 etc. etc. The variations are now a lot more temperate.

Before

Now

Obviously this month there will still be a lot of change in the rankings as many things have been adjusted. The good news is that the clearing out of moribund or spammer blogs has cleared a number of places, and there are thus more blogs on their way up than on their way down. We cannot yet reveal the rankings as verifications are still being carried out, but there are some noteworthy and indeed worthy leaps. A few falls as well but that is to be expected. The summer entailed a drop in activity for many blogs but that is true everywhere (you will have likely seen the report on Technorati). It is of course up for analysis, but we hope at least to have provided an improved and cleaner ranking.
